- AHF emphasizes the importance of condoms on International Condom Day to prevent HIV/AIDS, STIs, and unwanted pregnancies among young people
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria has embarked on a campaign targeting the youth population in Benue State, emphasizing messages of abstinence from sex or consistent and correct condom use.
AHF’s initiative aims to mark the 2024 International Condom Day (ICD) while raising awareness about the importance of condom use in preventing HIV/AIDS, other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), and unwanted pregnancies.
Steve Aborishade, AHF’s Advocacy and Marketing Manager, stated in a press release issued in Makurdi that the foundation is strategically addressing the youth demographic with messages promoting abstinence. For those unable to abstain, the emphasis is on using condoms consistently and correctly.
Dr. Echey Ijezie, AHF Nigeria Country Programme Director, highlighted that the World Health Organization (WHO) records over one million people globally acquiring an STI every day, with 117 million new HIV infections reported since 1990. He emphasized the importance of condoms as a safe, effective, and essential tool in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The campaign underscores the critical role of education and awareness in promoting sexual health and preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS and other STIs among young people in Benue State.
