- The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) urges swift implementation of the teachers’ professional salary structure, pending since 2023
- NUT’s National President, Comrade Audu Amba, recalls former President Buhari’s approval of a special salary scale for teachers in 2020
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has voiced its concern regarding the delayed implementation of the teachers’ professional salary structure in the national budget, calling for swift action to rectify the situation.
During the union’s 6th Annual Solemn Assembly in Abuja on Monday, Comrade Audu Amba, the National President of NUT, emphasized the importance of promptly implementing the salary structure, which should have been in place since 2023.
Amba recalled that on October 5, 2020, in commemoration of World Teachers Day, former President Muhammadu Buhari approved a special salary scale for teachers in the country. This approval also entailed extending teachers’ years of service and retirement age.
The special salary scale included provisions such as rural posting allowance, science teachers allowance, and peculiar allowance. Additionally, promises were made to construct low-cost housing for rural teachers and sponsor annual refresher training sessions to enhance teaching and learning practices.
However, Amba expressed regret that despite the former President’s approvals, the implementation of the professional salary structure for teachers has been pending.
In light of this, he urged the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure the swift execution of these policies to bolster the development of the nation’s educational sector.
Amba further explained that the NUT’s solemn assembly was organized to entrust the Union’s activities into the hands of God, seeking divine intervention for the welfare and success of teachers and the nation as a whole.
He underscored the importance of involving religious leaders from Islam and Christianity to lead prayers for the prosperity and advancement of Nigerian teachers and the country.
Amba concluded by affirming his commitment to elevating the Union to greater heights, building upon the achievements of his predecessor, and striving for the betterment of Nigerian teachers.
