The Federal Government has highlighted Nigeria’s transportation sector as a significant contributor to environmental pollution, attributing this to the sector’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels and the absence of alternative energy sources.
Addressing attendees at the Executive session of the 18th National Council on Transportation Conference in Abeokuta, Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Alkali, underscored the urgent need to transition towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions across the country.
Alkali emphasized the imperative of modernizing Nigeria’s transportation systems by embracing green manufacturing and industrialization, particularly transitioning to natural gas and other renewable energy sources.
“The transportation sector’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels and lack of alternative energy options have led to environmental pollution, fuel price volatility, and other socio-economic challenges,” noted the minister.
He advocated for prioritising innovative technologies to address energy challenges within the transportation sector, including developing new renewable energy sources and implementing smart city concepts.
Furthermore, Alkali outlined the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing policies and strategies to foster Nigeria’s safe, affordable, and sustainable transport system. He highlighted notable technological advancements undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Transportation to promote environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
In his remarks, Governor Dapo Abiodun affirmed the conference’s theme as indicative of the transportation sector’s readiness to address current challenges and offer sustainable solutions. He underscored the pivotal role of the transportation sector in driving sustainable growth and development in both the nation and the state’s economy.
