President Bola Tinubu has issued a stern warning to senior civil servants, cautioning them against exacerbating the challenging situation faced by Nigerians. This warning comes in the wake of recent policy changes, including the removal of fuel subsidies and adjustments in monetary policies announced during the President’s inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.
During a meeting with the Head of Service, the Body of Permanent Secretaries, and Directors-General of agencies at the State House, Tinubu stressed the importance of handling policies that impact the welfare of the people and the economy with urgency, diligence, and a strong sense of duty.
Addressing the public servants, Tinubu emphasized the need to approach their roles with a generational understanding, recognizing the significant impact their actions have on the lives of over 200 million Nigerians at home and abroad. He urged them to work towards fulfilling the dreams of future generations and not to hinder progress.
Tinubu expressed concern over delays and inefficiencies in implementing interventions and programs aimed at alleviating poverty and supporting vulnerable citizens. He made it clear that such ineffectiveness and unnecessary bureaucracy would not be tolerated under his administration.
To ensure accountability and progress, Tinubu directed the Head of Service to provide monthly briefings and key performance indicator (KPI) reports for review. Additionally, quarterly interactive meetings between the President and the Body of Permanent Secretaries will be scheduled to monitor progress in achieving the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Tinubu emphasized the importance of service to the nation and urged civil servants to work diligently towards changing the narrative about Nigeria and Africa as a whole. He stressed the need for focus and dedication to reshape the country’s trajectory positively.
In response, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, provided the President with an update on the service’s performance based on previously established KPIs, highlighting areas of progress and challenges.
