The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its allies orchestrated a peaceful demonstration in Osogbo, Osun State, causing a temporary halt to business activities.
Led by Christopher Arapasopo, the NLC chairman in Osun, the protesters commenced their march from Freedom Park, proceeding along MDS road while chanting songs critical of President Bola Tinubu.
Various groups joined forces with NLC, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria, and Nigeria Union of Journalists.
As the demonstrators converged at Olaiya Junction, traffic along the Osogbo/Gbongan road came to a standstill, impeding vehicular movement.
Under Olaiya Bridge, where the protesters gathered for over two hours, local businesses felt the impact as their operations stopped.
Law enforcement agencies, including the police, Department of State Security, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, were on hand to oversee the protest.
However, business activities continued uninterrupted in other parts of the state capital, even amidst the demonstration.
Addressing the crowd, Dr. Adeola Egbedokun, ASUU Coordinator for Akure Zone, decried the hardships faced by Nigerians and urged the government to reconsider its policies.
Egbedokun highlighted a lack of awareness among some citizens regarding the adverse effects of governmental decisions, urging workers to educate others on the need for collective action against the rising cost of living.
Meanwhile, Christopher Arapasopo reiterated the call for immediate government intervention to alleviate economic hardships.
Expressing disappointment in the current situation, Arapasopo emphasized the need for tangible solutions to address the prevailing hunger and discontent among Nigerians.
