- Governor Senator Douye Diri of Bayelsa State plans to include members from other political parties in his new cabinet
- Diri emphasizes consultation and aims for a diverse cabinet reflecting the makeup of Bayelsa’s populace
Governor Senator Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has indicated that members from other political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP), will be considered for positions in his new cabinet.
Diri disclosed this Thursday following the weekly five-kilometre Prosperity Walk, which concluded at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa.
Elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 11, 2023 governorship election, Diri and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, began their second term on February 14, 2024.
He emphasized his commitment to consulting widely and ensuring the inclusion of cabinet members from various political parties across the state to establish an inclusive government.
Diri said, “We will not delay reconstituting our cabinet because we will not create new individuals from thin air. The composition of my cabinet will still reflect the diverse makeup of Bayelsa’s populace, as we are familiar with one another.”
“We will engage in extensive consultations and consider all segments of society and interests. The November 11 election was not solely about my Peoples Democratic Party; it also involved members of the All Progressives Congress and even the Labour Party. Hence, it shouldn’t be surprising to see names from such parties in the cabinet,” he added.
Diri further expressed the state government’s commitment to sports development by announcing plans to construct a new, modern stadium. This initiative aims to foster youth engagement and position Bayelsa to host national and international sporting events.
