Adamawa state government has confirmed the index case of Lassa fever.
The government, in a statement by the state Ministry of Health & Human Services, identified a member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, at the state permanent orientation camp in Damare, near Yola, as the index case.
The victim is unnamed but is referred to as ‘her’, to mean that it is a female corps member.
According to the statement, the corps member, after being suspected to exhibit symptoms of lassa fever, was taken to the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital Yola and was confirmed positive.
It said this was after scrutiny of samples taken to the National Reference Laboratory, Abuja.
The statement, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Health & Human Services, Zira Mathias Bubanani, warned the general public to adopt personal hygiene habits as precautionary measures.
The ministry urged the general public against panic as it was doing all that was necessary to stem the spread of the disease.
It called on the public to report suspected case of Lassa fever to a nearby hospital or health worker.
