The Niger State Government has announced the commencement of a recruitment drive aimed at hiring 1,000 health workers, including doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The initiative aims to bolster the staffing levels in hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state.

Dr. Ibrahim Dangana, the Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, disclosed this during the National Immunization Plus Days (NIPDs) flag-off ceremony at the Emir’s palace in Minna. Alongside the immunization campaign, the event also featured the distribution of mama kits, ready-to-use-therapeutic food items, and motorcycles to immunization facilitators.

Dr. Dangana highlighted that the governor has lifted the embargo placed on healthcare worker recruitment by the previous administration. He emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing staff promotion, study leave, and welfare policies to create a conducive environment for healthcare workers to remain in the state.

Niger state moves to regulate prices of commodities, bill passes first reading

The Niger State government is initiating measures to oversee commodity prices, with a bill for the establishment of a Price Control Board successfully passing its first reading at the State House of Assembly.

This development follows a federal high court in Lagos instructing the federal government to set prices for goods and petroleum products within seven days. The bill, presented during Thursday’s plenary by Isa Etsugaie (APC-Agaie), aims to empower the Price Control Board to regulate prices and enhance the market’s supply and demand dynamics.

He said the board would monitor the distribution methods of essential commodities and the operations of the state supply company and other commercial organisations.

The lawmaker said the board would also help to track price movements and relate them to other developments in the state economy.

Etsugaie said the board would provide important data and analysis on the market situation in the state, reporting directly to the governor.

The house thereafter agreed to the bill’s principles and approved it to be considered for further debate and possible amendment.
