- Senator Akume identifies global economic downturns, conflicts, biodiversity loss, and climate change as hurdles to achieving SDGs in Nigeria
- Despite challenges, Nigeria has made notable progress since 2016 towards fulfilling its commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has illuminated the reasons behind Nigeria’s ongoing struggle to fulfil the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking at the High-Level National Dialogue on SDG Implementation in Abuja, Senator Akume highlighted various factors contributing to Nigeria’s challenges in meeting the SDGs objectives.
Represented by Mr. Ibok Abia, a director in his office, the SGF lamented that despite the noble intentions of the SDGs, they face formidable obstacles such as global economic downturns, violent conflicts in certain regions, biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, desertification, and climate change, all of which place considerable strain on the scientific community.
Despite these hurdles, Senator Akume acknowledged the country’s notable progress since adopting the SDGs in 2016. He emphasized that while challenges persist, Nigeria has made significant strides towards fulfilling its SDG commitments.
The dialogue, organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD) in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs (OSSAP-SDGs) and other partners, underscores the collective efforts to address the complexities surrounding SDG implementation in Nigeria.
