Despite a Federal High Court directive urging parties to maintain the status quo regarding the appointment of interim management committees (IMCs) for local government areas in Kano State, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf swore in caretaker committees for all 44 LGAs on Friday.
According to Daily Trust, the court order, issued in response to a suit naming several state and federal entities as respondents, including Governor Yusuf and the Kano State House of Assembly, urged all parties to uphold the existing state of affairs pending further judicial proceedings. The matter is scheduled for a hearing on March 14.
Meanwhile, the ad hoc committee of the Kano State House of Assembly, responsible for vetting IMC nominees, cleared all candidates following a thorough screening process. The committee’s report, submitted to the Assembly, affirmed the suitability of all nominees for appointment.
On Friday, Governor Yusuf, accompanied by state officials and party leaders, presided over the swearing-in ceremony at the Coronation Hall of the State Government House. The event, which commenced at 5:20 p.m. and spanned four batches, concluded by 6:00 p.m. amidst enthusiastic support from spectators.
During the ceremony, Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of competence and trust in the selection of committee members, urging them to fulfill their duties diligently. He reminded them of the critical role local government councils play and urged them to demonstrate empathy and exemplary leadership.
Governor Yusuf also highlighted the administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and assured close monitoring of their performance. He specified that their tenure would last three months, with their effectiveness determining subsequent actions.
