- Passengers on Delta Airlines’ Lagos-Atlanta flight faced agitation due to unexpected rescheduling, with unclear communication and concerns over provisions
- Flight delay attributed to mechanical fault; Delta Airline’s Media Consultant assures affected passengers of overnight accommodation and safety standards adherence
Passengers scheduled for the Lagos-Atlanta flight on Delta Airlines found themselves in a state of agitation at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) on Friday following the unexpected rescheduling of their flight.
Reports indicate that passengers boarded the aircraft, anticipating a 12 p.m. departure, only to remain seated for approximately four hours without clarity on the delay. According to one passenger, the initial explanation was the need to refuel the aircraft, but later, they were informed of a mechanical fault, rendering the flight unable to proceed.
In response to the situation, the airline revised the flight schedule to 9:00 a.m. Saturday while making arrangements to accommodate affected passengers in accordance with civil aviation regulations.
Expressing their frustration, passengers voiced concerns over the lack of communication and inadequate provisions, particularly regarding perishable items in their luggage that might spoil by the next day.
While some passengers expressed discontent with the arrangements, including uncertainty about the hotel accommodation provided, Delta Airline’s Media Consultant in Nigeria, Mr. Tope Ogbeni-Awe, refuted claims of a protest at the airport.
Ogbeni-Awe clarified that the flight delay was due to a mechanical issue and crew constraints, necessitating the rescheduling of the flight to ensure compliance with safety standards. He assured affected passengers of accommodation in a hotel overnight, adhering to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) guidelines, with plans for resuming the flight on Saturday morning.
The incident underscores the challenges airlines face in managing unexpected disruptions while striving to uphold passenger satisfaction and safety.
