The atmosphere in Oke Kura area of Ilorin, Kwara State capital, on Friday was charged and steeped in apprehension.
A melee broke out in the area after a middle-aged man, identified as Kazeem Adam, stabbed one of the officers on duty at the Kwara State Command of the Correctional facility during a brawl.
During the ensuing pandemonium engendered by the physical confrontation between the assailant and the officer, there was a gunshot that hit a nearby vulcanizer.
The vulcanizer was immediately rushed to a nearby health facility, while the assailant was also overpowered, handcuffed, and arrested by police officers from the ‘C’ Division.
Earlier, residents and business owners around the correctional centre were said to have been attacked by the 28-year-old assailant before descending on the officer at their gate.

“He was throwing stones at people and their shops, a development that forced people to immediately close their shops while others took to their heels for fear of being wounded by the assailant,” a source in the area said.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the State Command of the Correctional Centre Adegbulugbe Philip confirmed the incident.
“One Kazeem Adam aged, 28, of Ita Ogunbo armed with a knife and stone started smashing a tricycle windscreen in our area at about 8 am.
“The said man smashed and broke a Correctional Service Bus with Registration No A240 7NC. In an effort to arrest him, ASC Ismail Kabir, attached to Oke-Kura prison and who was on guard struggled with the rifle with him. During the process, the suspect stabbed ASC Kabir on his head and as a result, he sustained deep cuts on his head and hand.
“During the struggle, his rifle accidentally discharged and as a result, the bullet hit one Abdullahi Ayinla the vulcanizer.
“Both victims are currently on admission at State General Hospital, Surulere, and Balogun Hospital Ilorin, respectively, and are responding to treatment. Preliminary investigation is on,” he said
