- Kabiru Adamu and Reno Omokri called for strategies to protect critical infrastructure in Africa to prevent potential attacks
- Adamu stressed the need for better protection of undersea cables or contingency measures to prevent similar outages in the future
Intelligence and security expert Kabiru Adamu, alongside former presidential aide Reno Omokri, has called on African leaders to devise strategies to safeguard critical infrastructure and shield the continent from potential attacks.
Their remarks respond to the recent undersea cable cuts that disrupted broadband internet connectivity to Nigeria and other West African countries.
Adamu emphasized the vulnerability of Africa’s security strategies as long as critical infrastructure like undersea cables remains susceptible to attacks. He stressed the necessity for better protection of these cables or the implementation of contingency measures to prevent similar outages in the future.
Furthermore, Adamu urged organizations such as the African Union and the African Development Bank to develop strategies to mitigate such challenges, highlighting the importance of embracing risk management in developing national security strategies.
Omokri echoed similar sentiments, urging the Nigerian government to promote the patronage of domestically manufactured products. He expressed concerns over the security risks posed by reliance on undersea cables, especially in times of conflict, citing examples such as Niger’s experience with France turning off its satellite communications.
Omokri emphasized the significance of his #GrowNairaBuyNaija campaign, advocating for increased reliance on locally produced goods to enhance Nigeria’s security and economic resilience.
