- Sources disclosed that the marauders stormed the communities from neighbouring Nasarawa state through Agatu LGA
Armed herders wreaking havoc in Nigeria’s middle state of Benue have struck again.
The rampaging herdsmen attacked communities in Apa Local Government Area, LGA, of the state and killed three locals.
Ikobi, Ugbobi and Inyakwu communities in the troubled local government were attacked simultaneously on Sunday.
Sources disclosed that the marauders stormed the communities from neighbouring Nasarawa state through Agatu LGA.
They added that the assailants fired live rounds at hapless locals, injuring many in the process.
Another source said some brave youth fended off the attackers, giving many locals ample time and opportunity to escape the onslaught.
He disclosed that reports from the affected communities indicated that the attackers attacked the communities “at about 7pm. They came unexpectedly because we had no issues with them.
“The three affected villages, Ikobi, Ugbobi and Inyakwu were attacked at the same time. Luckily the people managed to escape because some courageous youths also stood up against them.
“Unfortunately the herders were armed with sophisticated weapons but the resistance put up by the youths helped the people to flee to safety.
“So far one person in each of the three villages were killed in the attack and several other sustained injuries.
“After the attack they all retreated to where they came from but as we speak the affected communities have been deserted.”
The National Chairman of Apa Development Association, ADA, Mr. Eche Akpoko confirmed the development.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent, SP, Catherine Anene has not issued a statement on the incident.
