House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations
  • The House further urged the federal government to foster the growth of the local Adire/Kampala fabric production sector in Nigeria

The House of Representatives has called on the federal government to prohibit and criminalize the importation of Adire/Kampala and other counterfeit locally produced fabrics into the country.

The House emphasized that this step is crucial to safeguard the domestic cottage industry and preserve foreign exchange reserves.

This resolution was reached following the adoption of a motion presented by Afolabi Afuape (APC-Ogun) during the plenary session in Abuja on Tuesday.

The House further urged the federal government to foster the growth of the local Adire/Kampala fabric production sector in Nigeria, emphasizing its role in protecting the domestic cottage industry and conserving foreign exchange reserves.

Afuape, in his motion, highlighted that the influx of foreign imitations of Adire/Kampala and tie-dye fabrics into Nigeria’s market has had adverse effects on the local industry, resulting in a decline in the livelihoods of local producers and causing job losses.

Adopting the motion, the House mandated its Committee on Commerce to collaborate with the National Directorate of Employment to establish formal training and orientation programmes for all local fabrics producers.

The training, according to the House, should be centred on skills, quality control, marketing and business management.

It urged proper monitoring of relevant agencies charged with evaluating the periodic progress of the Nigerian cottage industry.

The House also mandated the Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency to launch a nationwide campaign to promote the cultural significance of Adire/Kampala.
