Akwa Ibom: Son kills 75-year-old father over land dispute

One Okon Edet has allegedly hacked his father, Edet Oyoho, to death in Akwa Ibom, the police in the State have disclosed.

The incident happened in Uruting Village, Okobo Local Government Area of the southern State.

He was said to have ended his father’s life on March 13, 2024 over a parcel of land in the area.

The suspect, who confessed to the crime, has since been apprehended and detained by the police in the state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, confirmed the incident to news men.

According to him, the deceased owned numerous parcels of land in the state, adding that the suspect cited the deceased decision to sell the land given to him to build a house for his action.

He said, “On March 13, 2024, following reliable intelligence, operatives of Okobo Division arrested one Okon Edet of Uruting Village in the Okobo L.G.A. for killing his father, one Chief Edet Okon Oyoho, aged 75, of the same address, by beating him mercilessly with a machete, leading to his demise.

“The suspect confessed to the crime. His reason for perpetrating the heinous crime was that he got information that his father, now late, who owns many parcels of land in their community in Okobo L.G.A., has sold many of the lands, including the one he gave to him as his son to build a house.”

He added that when the suspect approached his father to demand payment for the land, he responded that the buyers had not yet made their payment, which led to him viciously beating his father to death.

“So, he confronted his father and confirmed that the information was true, and he asked his father for the money he got from selling the land, and the father replied that the buyers hadn’t paid. So, he got angry and macheted him to death,” the police spokesperson added.
