Governor Hyacinth Alia Halts Mining Operations in Benue for Data Verification

Governor Alia emphasized his administration's zero tolerance for illegality

Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has issued a directive to suspend all mining activities pending a comprehensive verification exercise to gather accurate mining data. The announcement came during the inauguration of 60 ‘mining marshals’ from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), who are tasked with curbing illegal mining across Benue State.

Represented by his deputy, Barrister Sam Ode, Governor Alia emphasized his administration’s zero tolerance for illegality, urging civil defence personnel to remain vigilant in combating criminal activities. He underscored the importance of collaboration between the marshals and the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) to safeguard the interests of Benue residents.

Governor Alia disclosed that he had convened meetings with members of the Miners Association and issued instructions for suspending all mining operations until MIREMCO could compile comprehensive data on miners. He stressed that the verification must be completed before resuming mining activities to ensure transparency and regulatory compliance.

The governor urged the security apparatus, joint task force on illegal mining, and MIREMCO to prioritize the well-being of the people and boost internally generated revenue (IGR) by enforcing regulations effectively.

Barrister Fidelis Mnyim, the state Commissioner for Justice and Public Order and Chairman of MIREMCO, reiterated Governor Alia’s commitment to curbing illegal mining while promoting lawful mining activities. He emphasized the importance of implementing a comprehensive checklist to scrutinize the mining sector in Benue, ensuring adherence to regulatory standards.

Governor Alia’s directive reflects the government’s proactive measures to regulate the mining sector, combat illegal activities, and protect the interests of the people of Benue State.
