  • The CNPP calls for Barrister Julius Abure’s resignation due to his handling of the Labour Party’s internal crisis
  • CNPP praises INEC for refusing to endorse the outcome of the LP’s disputed national convention, urging Abure to step down

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called for the resignation of Barrister Julius Abure, the embattled national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), citing his alleged mishandling of the party crisis.

In a statement released yesterday by Comrade James Ezema, the CNPP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, the organization expressed concern over the ongoing leadership dispute within the party.

The CNPP also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its refusal to succumb to pressure to endorse the outcome of the recent controversial national convention organized by a faction of the LP.

“In light of the apparent lack of internal democracy in many of Nigeria’s political parties, INEC’s decision to resist pressure to endorse the disputed convention outcome is commendable,” stated Ezema.

“Therefore, we urge Barrister Julius Abure to demonstrate leadership by resigning from his position as the party’s national chairman.”

Ezema emphasized the importance of upholding liberal democratic values, including inclusive representation and adherence to the rule of law within political parties.

He highlighted the lack of inclusivity leading up to the convention held in Anambra State, noting its contradiction to a Federal High Court judgment issued on July 23, 2021.

The court had ordered parties involved in the Labour Party leadership dispute to “maintain the status quo ante bellum” pending further court orders, Ezema explained.

However, when contacted for comment, the LP’s national publicity secretary, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, declined to provide a statement.
