President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, hailed Comrade Ali Chiroma, one of his predecessors, for his service to Nigeria. Chiroma passed away at the age of 92 at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital after a brief illness on Tuesday.

Ajaero, speaking at the 3rd-day prayers for the late labour leader in Maiduguri on Friday, praised Chiroma’s leadership during a challenging period under the military regime. He emphasized Chiroma’s courage and intellectual vigour, necessary traits to navigate the murky environment of military rule as NLC President.

“He was the President at a time when few dared to lead the NLC, facing direct interference from the military regime, which viewed the NLC as a formidable opposition,” Ajaero remarked.

Promising to draw inspiration from Chiroma’s leadership style and other past leaders, Ajaero pledged to propel organized labour to greater heights.

Similarly, former president of Congress Comrade Ayuba Wabba extolled Chiroma as a beacon of courage, which is celebrated in Nigeria and internationally. He urged the next generation of leaders to emulate Chiroma’s bravery and selflessness, lamenting the loss of an iconic figure.

In response, Chiroma’s eldest son, Alhaji Usman Chiroma, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, former President Muhammadu Buhari, Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum, and all others who conveyed messages of condolence to the family.
