- The World Health Organization (WHO) delivered medical supplies to Yobe State to combat the meningitis outbreak, aiding healthcare efforts
- Dr. Lawan Gana, the Commissioner for Health, expressed gratitude, emphasizing the significance of the supplies in battling the recent outbreak
In a bid to combat the ongoing meningitis outbreak claiming the lives of over 20 individuals, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has delivered various medical supplies to the Yobe State Government.
At the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu, Pharmacist Katugwa Emmanuel, representing Dr. Kumshida Yakubu Balami, WHO’s Interim Northeast Emergency Manager, transferred the supplies. These resources aim to aid healthcare workers and patients, and their families.
Acknowledging the state’s struggle with multiple disease outbreaks since last year, Dr. Lawan Gana, the Commissioner for Health, expressed gratitude to WHO. He emphasized that these supplies would bolster the state’s healthcare system, particularly in combating the recent meningitis outbreak.
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Emmanuel noted the emergence of a new strain of meningitis, type ‘C,’ which differs from the strain typically targeted in routine vaccinations for children under two years old.
Emmanuel expressed hope that providing these medical resources would safeguard healthcare workers, patients, and their families, ultimately minimizing the outbreak’s impact.
