In Zamfara state, a woman was reportedly killed by gunfire from operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) during their pursuit of suspected hoodlums.
It is alleged that the incident occurred at an Eid ground where, amidst the chase, a stray bullet struck the victim.
Following the incident, an upset crowd responded by setting ablaze a vehicle belonging to the NSCDC as a protest against the woman’s death.
Yazid Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Zamfara police command, confirmed that two NSCDC personnel have been detained for their involvement, and an investigation into the matter is currently underway.
“We have two of them in our custody. The command is still investigating the incident,” Abubakar said.
Meanwhile, Ikor Oche, spokesperson of NSCDC in Zamfara, said operatives of the corps did not shoot the woman.
Oche said the NSCDC operatives were at their post monitoring the environment of the Eid ground when they heard a gunshot.
He added that the woman was found fatally injured when men of the corps rushed to the scene of the incident.
“Because they were the ones close to the scene, a mob descended on them. They had to run for their safety and abandoned their Hilux vehicle,” he said.
“The vehicle was set ablaze by the mob and about seven of our men were injured. They did not shoot or kill anybody.”
Oche also said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident.
