Sanwo-Olu Vows to Demolish Buildings Failing Integrity Test

Babajide Sanwo Olu

Governor Babjide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State reiterated the government’s commitment to demolish buildings that do not pass its integrity test.

The governor made this assurance following the collapse of 14 buildings near the two structures that caught fire at Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island on Tuesday.

“A lot of residential apartments have been converted into warehouses. I can say without any doubt that more buildings will be brought down,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

He conducted an assessment of the unfortunate incident, emphasizing that the fire, which started over 48 hours ago, was still burning.

“We have identified about 14 houses affected by the fire, and more might collapse after further testing. What I witnessed here could have been prevented,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the Dosunmu Market would be shut indefinitely, with assistance provided to those affected by the closure.

“We will demolish any property that does not comply with our construction regulations. We cannot allow anyone to endanger lives, property, and the environment,” he emphasized.

While expressing concern over spending scarce resources on preventable accidents, the governor assured support for those affected by the fire to help them recover.
