The National Association For Peaceful Coexistence and Good Governance, a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has issued a stern warning of organizing a large-scale protest against Senate President Godswill Akpabio in light of recent allegations of budget padding levelled against him by Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi central.
Comrade Isiaku Balogun Nathaniel, the group’s founder, declared that the matter would not be ignored and called for President Bola Tinubu to investigate Ningi’s accusations. Nathaniel urged the Senate leadership to provide clarification and reinstate the suspended senator within one week.
“We are giving them seven days’ notice starting today (to do what is needed). We will barricade the National Assembly to call for transparency and accountability because Nigerians want to know what the senators are using N3.7 trillion to do,” he asserted.
Ningi’s claim of the Senate padding the 2024 federal government’s budget by over N3.7 trillion stirred turmoil in the National Assembly, resulting in the senator’s three-month suspension. The CSO sees Ningi’s revelation as crucial for national interest and views his suspension as unjust and detrimental to his constituency’s representation in the Senate.
If their demands are ignored, the CSO vowed to mobilize Nigerian youths for massive protests in the nation’s capital. They stress the importance of transparency and accountability in government actions and pledge to pursue these ideals relentlessly.
