- He explained that the laws that created the EFCC only empower it to prosecute criminal and questionable acquisition of wealth
Legal luminary and socio-political commentator, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, says the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is not empowered by any law to prosecute Naira abusers.
This is as the former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, chided the anti-graft agency for arresting crossdresser Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju (alias Bobrisky), who was convicted and jailed for six months for the offense.
Odinkalu said punishing people for spraying of the Naira does not fall within the Commission’s prosecutorial purview.
He explained that the laws that created the EFCC only empower it to prosecute criminal and questionable acquisition of wealth.
“The law that establishes the EFCC defines ‘economic and financial crimes’ to mean ‘non-violent criminal and illicit activity committed with the objectives of earning wealth illegally either individually or in a group or organized manner thereby violating existing legislation governing the economic activities of government and its administration,” Odinkalu stated
