An officer of the Katsina State Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has been lynched by rampaging mob in the State.
The officer met his end on Wednesday morning in Dankama, a border town in Kaita Local Government Area of the northern west State.
A colleague of the deceased was said to have shot dead a traveller, hence incurring the wrath of other motorists and locals who exacted revenge by taking the officer’s life.
Trouble began when the driver of a truck loaded with goods and passengers refused to stop when he was ordered to stop for routine checkups by the customs operatives.
In return, one of the officers allegedly fired gunshots at the moving truck, killing one of the passengers on board.
Consequently, the mob reportedly went after one of the officers, who ran into a nearby building to seek refuge and lynched him.
Tahir Balarabe, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the death of the officer, whom he identified as Awal Haruna.
“A mob action at one of our outposts led to the killing of one of our personnel earlier today while in the line of duty,” he said
