- Former international Finidi George is poised to become the new coach of the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles
- Sources close to the decision-makers believe Finidi’s temperament and recent assistant coaching experience make him the prime candidate
Finidi George, a former international, is widely expected to be appointed as the Super Eagles’ substantive coach.
According to reliable sources, those replacing Jose Peseiro with a new coach believe the former Ajax Amsterdam attacking winger is the best candidate for the plum job.
It should be noted that following Peseiro’s departure at the end of the 2023 AFCON, the NFF appointed George as acting coach. He oversaw the Super Eagles’ two friendlies against the Black Stars of Ghana and Mali.
Unfortunately, the Enyimba FC coach’s outing was not impressive. He lost 2-0 to Mali after a 2-1 victory over rivals the Black Stars.
Consequently, many felt he had failed to help his ambition, but all that may count for nothing as he may be announced as the new coach of the senior national team in a few days.
According to one of the sources who spoke to our reporter about the condition of anonymity, Finidi is the most level-headed among the indigenous coaches who have applied for the job.
Furthermore, he recently served as Peseiro’s assistant, which kept him up to date with the current Super Eagles players.
“From all indications, Finidi George is the next coach of the Super Eagles. He is calm and less problematic. Emmanuel Amunike and Dan Amokachi are not in this.
“NFF will soon announce a new coach for the Super Eagles, and barring last-minute changes, it will be Findi George,” said our source.
