  • ICPC is determined to pursue tax evaders, particularly high-profile individuals, aiming to generate N1.9 trillion in taxes
  • Collaboration between ICPC and FIRS will intensify efforts to combat tax evasion and financial crimes, especially in revenue-generating sectors

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has declared its determination to pursue Nigerians who evade taxes, particularly individuals in high positions.

The Federal Government aims to generate at least N1.9 trillion in taxes from defaulters to address long-standing tax evasion issues.

The anti-graft agency revealed plans to collaborate closely with the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) to combat tax evasion, especially within the revenue generation sector.

During a ‘collaboration visit’ to the ICPC headquarters in Abuja, Musa Aliyu, the ICPC Chairman, expressed concern over how corruption has corroded societal values and impeded economic progress in Nigeria.

Aliyu stressed the importance of partnering with FIRS to more effectively investigate and prosecute cases of corruption related to tax evasion and financial crimes.

He highlighted the significance of strategic alliances in combating corruption and affirmed the ICPC’s commitment to supporting FIRS in addressing tax evasion and financial crimes in revenue-generating sectors.

In response, FIRS Chairman Zach Adedeji emphasized the detrimental effects of tax evasion on government revenue, which could otherwise be allocated to public services.

Through collaborative efforts, both agencies intend to establish a joint task force to coordinate their activities and exchange information on mutual interests.

Additionally, joint training programs will be organized to enhance the skills of their personnel in investigating financial crimes and identifying tax evasion schemes.

The partnership between ICPC and FIRS aims to strengthen enforcement measures against tax evasion and contribute to improved revenue collection for national development.
