A thick cloud of apprehension and unrest descended upon Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, in Oyo State on Tuesday.
Widespread pandemonium broke out at the University after a trigger-happy police officer allegedly shot dead a student.
Trouble began after the police officer, identified as Saheed, stormed the school at the behest of some persons who had purportedly invited him to settle a misunderstanding between two people in the school.
While attempting to mediate in the said rift, the officer reportedly shot sporadically into the air, killing the deceased student in the process.
Two other students were also injured in the course of the shooting.
The incident has sparked unrest in the school as students locked the university’s gates in protest, demanding justice for the deceased.
A student, who is privy to the incident and spoke to Within Nigeria in confidence, said the name of police who gunned down the student is Saheed.
The student added that the authorities are trying to cover up the crime.
Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, ASP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident.
He said that the Command has commenced investigation into the matter.
Osifeso in a short statement made available to DAILY POST on Tuesday said, “Investigation is ongoing. Updates would be provided accordingly please.”
