- PANDEF leader Edwin Clark writes to IGP seeking intervention in Rivers State political crisis between Governor Fubara and Nyesom Wike
- Clark expresses concern over potential ramifications of impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara by Wike loyalists, urging IGP’s intervention
Chief Edwin Clark, a respected leader of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), has penned a letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), seeking intervention in the escalating political crisis in Rivers State.
The state has been plunged into turmoil due to the ongoing feud between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, now the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.
In response to the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) calling for impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara by the 27 House of Assembly members loyal to Wike, Clark expressed grave concerns about the potential ramifications.
During a press conference in Abuja, Clark emphasized that allowing such actions could exacerbate the crisis and lead to significant lawlessness not only in Rivers but also across the Niger Delta region.
He highlighted the alarming aspect of the 27 state House of Assembly members allegedly engaging in “illegal activities” under police protection, urging the IGP to halt their actions to prevent further tension and possible violence.
Clark stated, “The recent unprovoked announcement by the Speaker and 26 former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly might cause a breakdown of law and order… The consequences of such crisis will not only affect Rivers State politically, socially and economically but will also affect the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large.”
Expressing dismay over the involvement of uniformed policemen in supporting these activities, Clark stressed that law enforcement’s primary duty is to uphold the law rather than facilitate unlawful actions.
He concluded by urging proactive measures to avert a worsening of the situation, emphasizing the need to prevent further crises in a country already grappling with numerous challenges.
Clark’s appeal underscores the urgency of restoring peace and stability in Rivers State and the broader region, calling for swift and decisive action to address the escalating tensions.
