The National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, and STIs Control Programme (NASCP) have expressed optimism regarding its efforts to combat HIV/AIDS and STIs, citing positive outcomes facilitated by global support. Dr. Adebobola Bashorun, the National Coordinator of the programme, highlighted the significant strides made in reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS and ensuring quality services for people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Nigeria.
Partnerships with international organizations, such as PEPFAR (U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), The Global Fund, AHF, and others, have bolstered efforts and provided crucial support to the federal government’s initiatives.
Dr. Bashorun emphasized NASCP’s commitment to monitoring and enhancing HIV service delivery across various states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Through monitoring and supportive supervisory visits to HIV service delivery points in 15 states, NASCP aims to strengthen sustainable systems for HIV response.
Acknowledging the indispensable role of the Global Fund, Dr. Bashorun highlighted their continuous support in overseeing integrated HIV and Tuberculosis programs across all 36 states. This support includes vehicles and medical equipment donations, which were officially handed over to the Federal Government and unveiled by Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare.
In a recent development, the Global Fund, in collaboration with Family Health International (FHI 360), presented 72 Toyota Hilux vehicles and laboratory diagnostic equipment procured through a Global Fund Grant to the federal government in Lagos. This initiative underscores the ongoing commitment to combatting HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in Nigeria.
The statements from NASCP reflect a concerted effort to leverage global partnerships and resources in the fight against HIV/AIDS, signalling optimism towards achieving epidemic control and improving healthcare services for PLHIV across Nigeria.
