- Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu stresses Nigeria’s diversity as a source of strength and unity in addressing identity-based conflicts
- He highlights the need to acknowledge Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious composition while pursuing common national goals
Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, voiced concern over Nigeria’s prolonged struggle with identity-based conflicts.
In a keynote address at the start of a 2-Day National Engagement on Addressing Identity-Based Conflict, Kalu emphasized Nigeria’s diversity as a source of strength and unity.
Jointly organized by the International Republican Institutions (IRI) and National Endowment for Democracy (NED) at the National Assembly Library, Abuja, the event aimed to tackle identity-based conflicts under the theme “Mapping Actors to Reduce Identity Conflict.”
Kalu stressed the need to acknowledge Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious composition while pursuing common national goals.
“Identity-based conflicts have plagued our nation for too long, particularly in the North Central, North West, and South East regions. Ethnic tensions, religious divides, and resource competition have led to tragic consequences,” Kalu lamented.
However, he expressed optimism, stating, “Today, there is hope. By identifying the instigators of these conflicts, we can pave the way for a more peaceful, unified Nigeria.”
Highlighting the significance of unity amid diversity, Kalu urged collaboration across ethnic and linguistic lines. “Our differences enrich our nation. Despite our varied backgrounds, we all contribute to the tapestry of Nigeria,” he emphasized.
Kalu called for a thorough examination of key issues such as farmer-herder clashes, banditry, and regional agitations to develop effective solutions.
“In addressing Nigeria’s challenges, articulating the problem is half the solution. Today, we gather to chart a course towards national cohesion by understanding the roots of identity-based conflicts,” Kalu concluded.
