- The North East Development Commission (NEDC) plans to restore dams and irrigation facilities damaged by Boko Haram in Borno State
- NEDC’s initiatives include linking towns in Jere LGA with tarred roads to enhance security and agricultural productivity
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has pledged to restore all dams and irrigation facilities damaged during the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno State. Mohammed Alkali, the NEDC’s Managing Director, made this announcement during a visit by the management team of the Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) to the NEDC headquarters in Maiduguri.
Addressing the request to rehabilitate the powerhouse of irrigation channels at New Marte, which insurgents had destroyed, Alkali revealed that a comprehensive plan is being developed with the support of both state and federal governments. He highlighted the economic potential of revitalizing such infrastructure, which would benefit Borno State and neighbouring states by fostering economic activities in the region.
Alkali also discussed the commission’s initiatives to link towns and villages in Jere Local Government Area (LGA) with tarred roads, enhancing security and agricultural productivity.
Engr. Abba Garba, the Managing Director of the Chad Basin Development Authority, expressed gratitude for the NEDC’s assistance and appealed for continued support in rehabilitating dams and irrigation facilities. He emphasized that reviving these infrastructures is crucial for boosting agricultural production and ensuring food security in the region, especially given the challenges posed by the destruction of machinery during the insurgency.
This initiative by the NEDC is part of broader efforts to rebuild and develop the North East region, which has been severely affected by years of insurgency. The goal is to restore normalcy and economic stability.
