- The new power project aims to boost socio-economic development, create jobs, and improve local livelihoods in over 2,000 communities
President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a 132kv transmission line and a 132kv/33kv substation at Ode-Erinje in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State yesterday. This initiative aims to restore electricity to the southern senatorial district of Ondo State, which has been without power for over ten years.
Represented by the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Abubakar Momoh, President Tinubu emphasized that the commissioning of the power project aligns with the government’s goal to foster sustainable development in the Niger Delta region. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing adequate power to boost the national economy and improve the prosperity of all Nigerians.
“We all understand that power supply is crucial for enhancing socio-economic development, increasing family incomes, creating job opportunities, and reducing poverty,” Tinubu said. He highlighted that the new 132kv transmission line would deliver efficient and uninterrupted power to Okitipupa and surrounding areas, reviving local businesses and improving residents’ livelihoods.
The president also urged the local communities to protect the infrastructure against vandalism, ensuring the project’s sustainability.
Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), noted that the power project would provide electricity to over 2,000 communities in the Okitipupa, Irele, Ilaje, and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas of the Ondo Southern Senatorial District. He stressed the urgency of linking Ondo South to the national grid after 15 years without power.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State commended President Tinubu for restoring electricity to the southern senatorial district. He stated that the project signifies a strong commitment to the region’s progress and development. The governor pledged that the state government would ensure the project’s protection for the entire state’s benefit.
Benson Obayelu, the project contractor, explained that the project, awarded to his company in 2012, faced delays due to currency devaluation. He mentioned that power is being evacuated from the Omotosho Power Plant to Ernje in Okitipupa, which would significantly improve the economic conditions of the affected communities.
Oba Frederick Oladele, the Orungberuwa of Ode-Erinje, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his Renewed Hope agenda, bringing light back to the communities after years of darkness.
