- The police has condemned the killing
The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory has detained one of its officers for it called an “accidental discharge” that led to the death of one Oyebuchi Anene in Abuja.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh, said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
Adeh said the tragic and unprecedented incident happened in the Byazhin area of Abuja on Wednesday at about 9:45pm.
According to an X user, Papadeem, “Mr. Onyebuchi Anene was murdered in cold blood by a notorious police officer last night in Byazhin Kubwa Abuja. He was shot on the face with a teargas canister at a close range and the canister got stuck on his face. He was later rushed to the Trauma Centre.”
Adeh said the Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT, Mr Benneth Igweh, has ordered an investigation into the incident.
The statement reads, “In response to the tragic and unprecedented incident that resulted in the untimely demise of one Oyebuchi Anene ‘m’ of Byazhin Abuja on May 22, 2024, at about 9:45 PM, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, psc, mni, directed the DC Criminal Investigation Department to commence an immediate and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased.
“While the police officer responsible for the accidental discharge is in custody, the CP expresses profound and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the public at large. He unequivocally condemns the unprofessional and disheartening conduct of the police officer and assures family and the public of swift justice.
“Further development will be communicated in due course.”
