The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has expressed its dismay at Nigerian pilgrims’ persistent smuggling of kola nuts to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Labaran Abdullahi, Head of the National Reception Team in Madinah, highlighted the challenges posed to NAHCON’s operations, citing airport delays resulting from this practice. He addressed a group of journalists in the holy city on Sunday, emphasizing the commission’s implementation of new policies to expedite the transfer of pilgrims from airports to their accommodations.
Abdullahi underscored the Saudi government’s stance against importing kola nuts, identifying it as a primary issue. He urged state pilgrims coordinators to discourage pilgrims from bringing kola nuts, acknowledging the cooperation received despite occasional delays.
Additionally, Abdullahi noted another logistical issue: pilgrims inadvertently store their passports in their hand luggage after clearing in Nigeria. This oversight complicates clearance procedures in Saudi Arabia, especially when luggage is transferred to waiting buses or hotels.
Despite these challenges, Abdullahi commended the Saudi government’s seamless cooperation, affirming NAHCON’s commitment to facilitating a smooth and harmonious pilgrimage experience for all participants.
“Our goal is to ensure a hassle-free exercise that leaves pilgrims content,” he reiterated. “We remain dedicated to enabling pilgrims to fulfil their Hajj obligations as prescribed in the Holy Qur’an, ensuring a fulfilling journey for all.”
