- Dr. Yusuf Tanko revealed that Peter Obi is engaging with key political figures, including Rabiu Kwankwaso, for the 2027 elections
- Tanko emphasized the need for a political merger to address Nigeria’s challenges, focusing on a coalition of established parties
Dr. Yusuf Tanko, former spokesperson for Peter Obi’s presidential campaign in the 2023 elections, revealed that the former Anambra governor is actively engaging with key political figures in preparation for the 2027 elections. Among these figures is Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate.
Tanko shared these insights during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, emphasizing the need for a political merger to address Nigeria’s challenges by 2027.
“Obi has been meeting with owners of industries, technocrats, students, and political gladiators,” Tanko said. “We have contacted several significant figures, including Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Meetings have been held with various individuals and political parties, such as the SDP and ADC. Many of these parties are already in discussions amongst themselves.”
He highlighted the importance of a coalition of established political parties focused on rescuing Nigeria from its current difficulties.
However, Tajjuddeen Yusuf, a former federal lawmaker, expressed scepticism about a potential alliance between Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 elections.
“They worked together in 2019, so they can collaborate again. But I don’t see that happening,” Yusuf stated. “They met recently, and Atiku declared his intention to continue contesting as long as he is alive and healthy. This statement seemed to signal that he wouldn’t step down for Obi. A subsequent statement reinforced this view. I believe both Atiku and Obi will run in 2027.”
