Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has expressed concern over some police officers breaching the public trust they should uphold with integrity.
He urged Nigerians to resist giving away their money or property, even under police intimidation.
Egbetokun assured that under his leadership, the police would work to rebuild trust between the force and the public. He emphasized the need for swift justice against erring officers and measures to curb unprofessional behaviour.
The IGP encouraged Nigerians to report any infractions by police officers to the appropriate authorities.
He instructed senior officers to recommend personnel who demonstrate courage, integrity, and humanity for recognition.
Egbetokun made these statements on Friday at the Force headquarters in Abuja during a meeting with key officers responsible for the police’s internal control mechanisms.
“Over the years, we have seen that some personnel’s conduct has significantly deviated from the expectations of the force leadership,” he said.
“Officers who are supposed to uphold integrity and are held to high moral standards by society are frequently seen breaching the public’s trust.”
While internal measures to curb extortion and other vices continue, public cooperation is essential.
“I urge the public not to succumb to intimidation or part with their hard-earned money or properties unjustly,” he added.
