Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday, following a recommendation by his cabinet to dissolve the lower house of parliament, the Lok Sabha.
According to an official statement from the President’s House, President Murmu accepted Modi’s resignation along with that of the council of ministers and requested that Modi continue serving as prime minister until a new government is formed.
Modi’s resignation follows the standard protocol observed before establishing a new government in India.
The Election Commission of India released official data on its website early Wednesday, indicating that the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is poised to form the next government.
