According to data published by Open Nigerian States, the Enugu State Government has been recognized as the most prudent state regarding recurrent expenditures, a platform supported by BudgIT. The budget implementation report highlights that, out of the 36 states, six states—Benue, Imo, Niger, Rivers, Sokoto, and Yobe—did not have data available. The remaining 30 states collectively spent N986.64 billion on recurrent expenditures, which include workers’ salaries, refreshments, sitting allowances, travel, utilities, and other expenses in the first quarter of 2024.
Lagos State had the highest recurrent expenditures nationwide, amounting to N189.62 billion. Delta State followed with N68.68 billion. In the South East region, Ebonyi State led with N14.95 billion in recurrent expenses, followed by Abia State with N10.92 billion and Anambra State with N9.91 billion.
Enugu State distinguished itself by recording the lowest recurrent expenditure in the region and the country, at N7.51 billion.
Reacting to this achievement, the Good Governance Group, a civil society organization, praised Governor Peter Mbah for his fiscal prudence. In a statement by its national coordinator, Comrade Odinaka Okechukwu, the group emphasized that this development indicates Governor Mbah’s commitment to selfless service and responsible governance.
