The Kano State Government has approved the disbursement of N2,910,682,780 to cover the 2024 National Examinations Council (NECO) and National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) fees for 119,903 underprivileged students.

Dr. Umar Doguwa, the state’s Commissioner of Education, announced this development during a media briefing in Kano on Thursday. He clarified that any student who obtained at least four credits in any subject during the state’s last qualifying examinations (mock) would be eligible for this financial assistance.

Dr. Doguwa emphasized that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s concern for students facing financial challenges motivated the decision, which aimed to ensure they did not miss out on essential educational opportunities.

The financial support includes the government covering N24,250 for NECO and N21,000 for NBAIS per student. Initially, a proposal to subsidize fees only for students with eight credits was made, but Governor Yusuf rejected it, choosing instead to extend assistance to any student with four credits in any subject.
