- State to become first in the country to convert waste into energy sources
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, has said the state is working towards converting over 3,000 tons of waste product into fuel.
Oresanya disclosed this while speaking at the 2024 World Environment Day celebration held on Wednesday.
The year’s celebration is themed, “Achieving the Smart City Agenda through Climate Change Resilience and Urban Afforestation”.
According to the commissioner, the state was on track to become first in the country to convert waste into energy sources.
He said, “We are taking a bold giant step in making sure that over 3,000 tons of waste generated in Ogun State daily is converted to fuel for our cement industries and we are doing this with the support of our main sponsors today, Gasco Marine, which is also into CNG production.
“We are all poised to make sure that Ogun State will be the first state in Nigeria where we have zero waste and where all our waste would be converted to energy source.
“We are also determined to create a new line of economy that will take advantage of the possibility of a circular economy through green finance mechanisms for decarbonization.”
While delivering his lecture, Prof. Zachariah Yaduma, Director- General, Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, stated that the state must have efficient energy use, good urban planning, green infrastructures, among others to achieve a smart city.
