The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed telecom companies to ensure subscribers have access to content that preserves and positively influences Nigerian culture.

In a statement signed by Caleb Nor, the Media Assistant to the Executive Secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), it was revealed that Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, made this announcement during a visit from Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, the Executive Secretary/CEO of NICO, in Abuja.

Maida emphasized the commission’s commitment to supporting the institute in its efforts to promote the cultural reorientation of Nigerians. He stressed the importance of stakeholders’ collective efforts to reorient Nigerians towards their cultural values, highlighting the potential risks of foreign content shaping Nigerian culture if domestic content production does not increase.

In line with these efforts, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye proposed that telecommunication operators in Nigeria integrate cultural content into caller tunes and provide cultural information through shortcodes and robocalls.

Ajiboye also disclosed NICO’s plans to launch a Global Cultural Digital Platform named “DuduPlugs.” This platform aims to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and contribute to preserving Nigerian culture amidst the influence of Westernization.
