The Kano State Government has hired 5,000 new teachers to strengthen its education sector. Governor Abba Yusuf announced this move on Saturday while declaring a state of emergency in education.
Governor Yusuf stressed the importance of quality personnel for managing public schools, aiming to provide the necessary manpower to deliver quality education. He assured that the days of pupils studying under harsh conditions are over and promised to rehabilitate public schools and supply necessary furniture fully.
“The declaration of a state of emergency in education is a bold step to tackle the sector’s challenges,” Yusuf stated. He emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the quality of education through better learning materials and infrastructure.
Yusuf highlighted the severe crisis in Kano’s education sector, noting that over 4.7 million pupils sit on bare floors while 400 schools have only one teacher for all classes and subjects. He accused the previous administration of closing schools and converting vandalized ones into commercial premises.
“Teachers are struggling with outdated and insufficient basic learning equipment, and many schools lack clean water and sanitation,” he added. Yusuf pledged to address these multifaceted problems, including the shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate training programs, and students’ socio-economic challenges.
“It’s time for investment in public education and a commitment to providing a quality learning environment for all,” Yusuf concluded.
