- NICO will ensure a dignified burial for Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the Nigerian flag designer, addressing perceived neglect in burial plans
- NICO, under President Tinubu’s administration, emphasizes respecting cultural norms and honoring national heroes like Akinkunmi with a fitting burial
The National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) has committed to overseeing the burial arrangements for Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian flag.
In a statement, Caleb Nor, media assistant to the Executive Secretary of NICO, announced that the institute aims to ensure Akinkunmi receives a dignified burial ten months after his passing.
Nor highlighted that NICO’s decision was influenced by recent news about the perceived neglect of Akinkunmi’s burial plans. Under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, NICO emphasized the importance of respecting Nigerian cultural norms and honouring national heroes.
Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, Executive Secretary of NICO, explained that this decision reflects the cultural value of respecting the deceased and honouring those who contributed significantly to Nigeria. Ajiboye stated, “Our culture mandates that we do not neglect our heroes. The federal government, recognizing the plea from Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi’s family, has tasked NICO with a major role in coordinating and collaborating with other agencies to ensure a fitting burial for this national hero.”
He further mentioned, “The Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Barr Hannatu Musa Musawa, is deeply concerned about this matter and has directed NICO to act immediately. We are contacting Akinkunmi’s family to determine how the federal government can provide a befitting burial.”
This initiative underscores NICO’s dedication to upholding Nigerian cultural traditions and honouring those who have shaped the nation’s identity.
