Tinubu Approves New Leadership for National Council on Climate Change

The President appoints Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe as the interim Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), pending confirmation by the NCCC Supervisory Council. Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, made this announcement on Sunday.

This appointment aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment to realizing “Nigeria’s green industrial vision, boosting investor confidence, and unlocking sustainable economic value through various climate finance instruments.”

Dr. Maduekwe, who brings over 15 years of experience in climate policy development and project implementation, will also serve as the Co-Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on the National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP).

Additionally, the President has appointed Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement. Shelleng will be seconded to the NCCC Secretariat and will handle all matters related to Climate Finance and Stakeholder/Donor Relations.

Mr. Olamide Fagbuji has been appointed Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations. Seconded to the NCCC Secretariat, Fagbuji will oversee the digitalization of a new open procurement process and cross-departmental procedural optimization initiative.

Ngelale stated that President Tinubu expects the new appointees to leverage their expertise and discipline to advance the nation’s green industrial development and climate action goals, contributing to sustainable growth and national prosperity. These appointments take immediate effect.
