- The Kaya Descendants Community Development Association petitioned the local government chairman over frequent bandit attacks in Giwa Local Government Area
- Farmers face extortion, harassment, kidnapping, and crop destruction by bandits, disrupting daily activities and preventing children from attending school
The Kaya Descendants Community Development Association in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State has submitted a formal petition to the local government chairman expressing its deep concerns about bandits’ frequent attacks in the area.
In a letter dated May 28, 2024, and signed by the association’s chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe Musa, the community outlined the escalating activities of bandits terrorizing the villagers. The letter, addressed to the local government chairman and shared with journalists in Zaria, highlights the severe challenges faced by farmers in Kaya and the surrounding regions.
According to the petition, farmers are being extorted by bandits who demand levies before allowing them to carry out farming activities. Despite complying with these demands, farmers still face harassment, kidnapping, and expulsion from their farmlands. The community also reported that their crops are often destroyed during the harvest season, further exacerbating their hardships.
The letter noted that these attacks have disrupted daily activities and instilled fear in the children, preventing them from attending school.
In light of these grave concerns, the community has appealed to the chairman of Giwa Local Government and other relevant authorities at the state and national levels to intervene and put an end to the relentless harassment and attacks by bandits.
