President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to Malawi President Lazarus Chekwera following the death of Vice President Saulos Chilima and other officials in a plane crash on Monday.
The Malawian government had previously announced that a military aircraft carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima was missing after it failed to land on Monday morning.
The plane, which took off shortly after 9:00 am local time (0700 GMT), was carrying the 51-year-old vice president along with nine others.
On Tuesday, the Malawian government reported that the wreckage had been found with no survivors.
Former Malawian first lady Shanil Dzimbiri was also on board.
The presidency in a statement on Tuesday, said, “President Tinubu commiserates with the families of the deceased over this distressing incident which happened on a mournful Monday, 10th June 2024.
“The President assures the Malawian nation of Nigeria’s support during this time of mourning and pray for the repose of the souls of the departed.”
The late Vice President was first elected vice president in 2014. Chilima is a widely loved figure in Malawi, particularly among young people.
