  • Arewa Think Tank supports President Tinubu’s call for greater financial autonomy for local governments to improve accountability and development
  • The group criticizes state governors for neglecting local councils after elections and backs legal actions for local government autonomy

Arewa Think Tank (ATTK), a prominent group from northern Nigeria, has supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s push for greater financial autonomy for local governments.

Recently, President Tinubu criticized state governors for exerting excessive control over local government administrations across the country.

In a statement by ATTK’s Chief Convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, the group highlighted issues of accountability and inefficiency that hinder the progress of local councils. They emphasized the need for governors to be accountable for the limited development at the grassroots level.

“Arewa Think Tank stands with President Tinubu in his critique of governors who prioritize local governments during elections for garnering votes, only to shift focus away afterwards,” the statement read.

The group expressed confidence in Tinubu’s efforts to bolster the country’s revenue base, urging governors to show empathy and urgently address local communities’ needs.

Additionally, ATTK voiced its support for the federal government’s legal action against all 36 state governors at the Supreme Court, advocating for full autonomy for local governments.

Moreover, the group criticized what they perceive as deliberate efforts to undermine key figures within President Tinubu’s administration, starting with the Comptroller General of Customs.
