- Shehu Sani clarified that Nasir El-Rufai was not actively involved in the June 12 struggle for democracy
- He acknowledged Governor Uba Sani’s support during their incarceration in the 90s, emphasizing his role in democracy activism
Human rights activist Comrade Shehu Sani has clarified that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, was not actively involved in the June 12 struggle for democracy.
Sani, a former senator among those imprisoned by the military regime for advocating civil liberties, made these remarks during a speech at a Democracy Day dinner held at the presidential villa in Abuja.
He praised Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State for his significant role during the activism of that period, refuting misconceptions that attributed his commendation to Nasir El-Rufai.
Sani stated, “I wish to correct a misconception reported in some media outlets. At the Democracy Day event, I specifically acknowledged Governor Uba Sani as the person who supported us during our incarceration in the 90s, not the immediate past governor.”
He highlighted Governor Uba Sani’s efforts to maintain communication with their families and continue the struggle for democracy in Northern Nigeria. He emphasized that Nasir El-Rufai was not actively involved during that historical period.
Sani concluded by emphasizing the pivotal roles played by various individuals in the June 12 struggle, including notable figures like Professor Ezekwesili, President Sowore, and others, whose contributions were integral to the movement for democracy in Nigeria.
