The Federal Government has announced an ambitious target for Nigeria’s creative industry to contribute $100 billion to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030. This announcement was made by the Minister of Culture, Art, and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa-Musawa, during the Ojude Oba festival celebration in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
Represented by the Director of Cultural Agencies and Heritage, Dr. Ben Ugo Anama, the Minister stated, “In line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the ministry will collaborate with stakeholders to promote, preserve, and protect our nation’s rich cultural heritage. This collaboration aims to ensure our cultural heritage reaches its enviable height according to our vision for the Ministry called Destination 2030.”
Musa-Musawa emphasized the economic potential of the arts, culture, and creative economy, expressing confidence that these sectors could significantly contribute to economic expansion. “Our ambitious goal is predicated on this drive, which is capable of yielding over $100 billion, increasing the GDP by 2030,” she added.
The Minister also announced plans to seek UNESCO backing for the annual Ojude Oba Festival, highlighting the festival’s importance in enhancing Nigeria’s international image and significant impact on the tourism sector. “I have observed that the Ojude Oba Festival has not yet received UNESCO approval as one of its recognized festivals. With its profound impacts, the status of a festival like Ojude Oba deserves international recognition. We will activate all necessary processes to achieve this without further delay,” she assured.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, speaking at the event, praised the Ojude Oba Festival for giving Ijebuland and Ogun State a distinct identity. He commended the festival’s role in promoting cultural heritage and fostering unity among the people.
The Federal Government’s vision for Destination 2030 underscores the significant role of the creative industry in economic growth and cultural preservation, setting a clear path for future development and international recognition.
